Overview

What Is MOTS-C?

Get Started

MOTS-C is a peptide. A peptide is a short chain of amino acids. MOTS-C has 16 of them. It is unusual because it is coded by DNA inside the mitochondria, the parts of a cell that make energy.

Most of what is known about MOTS-C comes from studies in mice and in cells. Human research is early. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved, and MOTS-C is not FDA-approved for any use.

Protocol MD's MOTS-C is made for you by a US-licensed 503A compounding pharmacy. It is a shot you give yourself under the skin. It ships cold, so put it in the fridge when it arrives.

How does a MOTS-C cycle work?

Each cycle is 6 weeks of MOTS-C, then a 4-week rest. You buy one cycle at a time. You pay once at checkout, and there is no subscription. It ships cold.

How much does MOTS-C cost?

Protocol MD is cash-pay, with no membership fee. One cycle is $349. We place a hold at checkout and only charge it if a physician approves. If not, the hold is released.

Is MOTS-C FDA-approved?

No. MOTS-C is not FDA-approved for any use. Protocol MD's MOTS-C is compounded for you by a US-licensed 503A pharmacy, and compounded medications are not FDA-approved. A physician decides if it is right for you.

How is MOTS-C prescribed through Protocol MD?

You complete a short online intake, and a US-licensed physician (MD or DO) reviews your history and goals to decide whether MOTS-C is appropriate — a physician makes the call, never an algorithm. We place a hold on your card at checkout, and if they decide it isn't right for you, the hold is released and you're never charged.

Do I need insurance?

No insurance is required — Protocol MD is cash-pay and transparently priced, with no surprise fees. HSA and FSA debit cards are accepted at checkout, and every charge has an itemized receipt in your patient portal for reimbursement. Physician-prescribed medication is generally an eligible expense, but plans vary, so check with your plan administrator.

In depth

What the Research on MOTS-C Shows So Far

The research on MOTS-C is early. Most of it is in mice and in cells, not in people. No large human trial has tested it as a treatment. Protocol MD sells MOTS-C, so read this section knowing we have a reason to want you to buy it.

  • The first mouse studies — A 2015 study in Cell Metabolism, Lee and colleagues, first described MOTS-C. The work was in mice and cells. It looked at how MOTS-C acts on the way the body handles sugar.
  • Exercise and aging in mice — A 2021 study in Nature Communications, Reynolds and colleagues, found that MOTS-C levels in people rose during exercise. It then tested MOTS-C in older mice. Mouse results do not tell you what will happen in a person.
  • What is not known — No large, controlled human trial has tested MOTS-C as a treatment. Its long-term safety in people has not been studied. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved, and MOTS-C is not FDA-approved for any use.

So what can be said? MOTS-C is an interesting peptide in early research, with little human data. That is why a US-licensed physician reviews every Protocol MD request for MOTS-C, and why no outcome is promised. Start the online visit to see if a physician thinks it fits you.
